Are You Carrying Around the Weight of Mountains?
Too often, when painful things happen, we continue to hold onto the weight of the experience for years after the fact. We metaphorically carry around the weight of mountains.
We’re meant to overcome the bad experiences, to journey past the adversity, but if we keep carrying around the pain with us, then it can get overwhelming. Imagine if you held onto the memory of every bad thing that’s ever happened to you (maybe you do). It would be exhausting, and everything would feel so heavy all the time.
Depression can feel like that sometimes. Even everyday struggles can feel immovable because we’re already carrying around the weight of mountains, so anything else is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
But it’s possible to let go of the past and put down the heavy burden you’re carrying around.
It’s ok to let go.
I don’t think there’s a scientific way to “let go of the past,” so for now we’ll have to stick to symbolic actions. 😃 I’ve always found doing forgiveness work to be helpful. You can also try doing a letting go ritual. And of course, general decluttering (emotional and physical stuff) can be helpful, because the literal stuff around you can also feel like it’s weighing you down.
In general, the answer is to declutter every aspect of your life. Emotional, spiritual, physical, environmental, etc. Just keep decluttering and forgiving (memories and physical things) until you start to feel a little lighter, and then declutter some more.
When I went home for Christmas recently I found it surprisingly emotional and cathartic to go through and throw out and recycle most of my old school work. While it was mostly homework, notes, and art work, going through all of it brought me back to that point in time and helped me process some of the memories, and then recycling a lot of it was like letting go of the weight from that period of my life.
As you journey through life, you don’t have to hold onto every brick that’s thrown at you. Use them to build a staircase, and then climb to the top.
