How to Create a Bedtime Routine

Although I’ll admit I’m very resistant to sticking to routines in my life, I do have a bedtime routine and morning routine that is pretty much the same every day even though I wasn’t even intending to have a routine originally.

I just sort of fell into doing the same things before bed each night.

I have seen over time though that having a routine before going to bed can help you fall asleep faster and be ready for the next day without worrying about forgetting something or trying to cram in extra work when you should be winding down from the day.

Of course, there are times when you might be working late on something and have to throw your routines out the window, but here’s my general bedtime routine:

The start of my evening / night time is whenever I stop working. Sometimes this is in the evening around 7 or 8pm and sometimes I’m working later so it’s not until 10 or 11pm or later.

Whenever it is, I decide that I’m done working for the day and consciously start winding down and getting ready for bed.

Sometimes I’ll watch some Netflix or a movie in the evening if I have time, or I might read a Kindle book (I usually do most of my reading as part of my morning routine though).

At this point I’m probably chilling in bed with my cat and laptop. I use Night Shift on my phone to take the blue light out of the screens, which may or may not be something from electronics that makes you stay awake longer. You’re not really supposed to use electronics at night if you’re trying to fall asleep because they can keep you up longer, so that’s something to consider.

When I start feeling tired or ready to go to bed, then I wash my face, brush and floss my teeth (remember to floss, kids!), and put on pajamas if Iā€™m not already wearing them.

Lately I’ve been taking melatonin to help fall asleep and stay asleep longer, so things like that can be helpful if you have trouble falling asleep.

Then I crawl into bed and snuggle with my cat for a while, and sometimes I’ll use my phone and earbuds to play some calming music or sound effects like a soundtrack of rain, for example (but if you do this, put your phone face down so the light doesn’t keep you up!).

And then I fall asleep. šŸ™‚
